Viruses in the Virtual Memory
Virtual memory is a good use of larger capacity hard drives and flash drives.. However, when viruses infect that portion of the memory, the operation of the computer slows and sometimes stops entirely.

Identify Infections
-
Viruses and other infections disrupt smooth operation and can cause irreparable damage. The easiest way to deal with viruses in virtual memory is to prevent them from infecting the computer. There are several antivirus programs available, free and commercial, that will achieve this. However, once infected, virtual memory must be cleaned. Make sure the antivirus programs are run in safe mode as well as normal operating mode on Microsoft Windows-based machines. Using multiple software is the best means of catching infections on multiple files or locations.
Removing Viruses
-
Viruses can cross computers and computer platforms spreading their damage. After a virus has been detected, it should be removed. This does not guarantee that all effects of the virus are removed, only the infected files are cleaned. Use the removal tool provided with the virus scanners. Backup all files on the virtual memory device or location to an alternative medium, such as a CD, DVD, external drive, flash drive or online back up service. Scan the backed up files with the antivirus software.

Cleaning Virtual Memory
-
Computers that are clean and virus-free make remote operation easier and safer. Reformat the virtual memory location or device. Restore the cleaned files from the backup. Reinstall any software in this location from the original media or from a fresh download. With each addition, confirm that the infection has not returned by scanning with at least two antivirus software applications.
