Equipment
-
You will need a core-aerating machine. These can be rented from large home improvement stores and rental centers. There are power-driven core aerators for extra-large turf areas.
Timing
-
The best time to aerate your lawn is in fall. The second-best time is in the spring. Do not core aerate in the summer.

Tips
-
Make note of where the sprinkler heads or shallowly planted sprinkler lines are located so you don't cut into them with the core aerator. When you are finished, leave the grass cores on the lawn, as they will decay back into the soil within a month.
