Exabyte Cleaning

Exabyte refers to a unit of data measure equaling 1 billion gigabytes, a nearly unfathomable amount of information. Global Internet traffic didn't exceed 1 exabyte until 2004. However, the brand name Exabyte refers to a tape drive storage system for backing up large amounts of data.

  1. Common Usage

    • In 2011, Google was forced to restore user profiles and archived email to thousands of users whose accounts had been wiped out during a routine software upgrade. The hard drive backup systems were also affected by the problem, so Google retrieved the data from their Exabyte cartridges.

    Cleaning Method

    • Exabyte tape drives write data to magnetic tape by means of a series heads, similar to older videocassette recorders (VCRs). Just like that old VCR, Exabyte heads get dirty. Most models require cleaning with a specialized head cleaner that looks like one of the backup tape cartridges, but the spooled material inside, combined with a solution dripped into the cartridge itself, runs across the heads and removes debris.

    Cleaning Schedule

    • Depending upon which model you use, there are two ways you will know it's time to clean your machine. Either you'll be warned by an LED indicator light on the unit, or the associated software will prompt you that it's time for a cleaning.
