Laser Weld Vs. Spot Weld Titanium

Laser welding, or laser beam welding, involves melting metal workpieces with a high intensity beam of light. Spot welding, or resistance spot welding, uses the heat generated by resistance to electrical current by two surfaces in contact with each other to melt, or fuse, metal workpieces.

  1. Laser Welding

    • Laser welding of titanium and its alloys requires extreme cleanliness if sound welds are to be achieved. A laser beam is readily transmitted through air, so laser welding of titanium has some advantages over electron beam welding, which requires high vacuum conditions.

    Thermal Conductivity

    • The thermal conductivity of titanium is similar to that of stainless steel, and as a result it can be spot welded in similar fashion. An inert gas, such as argon, is required to shield the weld from oxidation.

    Spot Welding

    • When titanium is spot welded, the metal in the vicinity of the current melts. When the current is removed, it solidifies to form a weld nugget, or "spot." Spot welding is suitable for joining titanium alloy sheets up to 1/2 inch thick.
