What Is a Power to Manual Steering Adapter?

Steering systems for cars come in two broad types. These are manual steering and power steering. As of February 2011, many cars come with power steering, which uses a computer to supplement the manual turning power of the driver. It is also possible to convert manual steering systems to power steering systems, and vice versa, using an adapter.

  1. Power Steering

    • Unlike manual steering, which requires the driver to turn the wheel using only his or her own strength, power steering uses engine power to amplify the torque applied to the steering wheel. This makes turning much easier and increases the amount of time drivers have to react to an emergency. Power steering thus provides a safer ride.

    Parts

    • Power steering adapters are constructed out of a variety of parts. In older adapters, these parts must be assembled manually using a wrench. Parts include the spacer, the castle nut, the ball stud seat, the ball stud, the bumper spring, the bumper, the adjusting bolt and the end plate.

    Installation

    • While older power steering kits required the disassembly and reassembly of much of the steering system, newer adapters do not require these steps. Newer kits also do not require the person installing the adapter to deal with all the small parts that make up the adapter. Rather, it only requires him to remove the old control valve and thread the adapter in its place.
