Optimal Storage Temperature for Organic Fruits & Vegetables thumbnail
Make your organic produce last longer by storing it at the proper temperature.

Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Organic produce is also not sprayed with a wax coating, so it is highly susceptible to faster spoilage and damage than waxed produce. Keeping organic fruits and vegetables at the proper temperature helps ensure longer shelf life. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Vegetables

    • Organic lettuce, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and green onions should be stored between 32 and 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Potatoes, yams, onions, peppers and tomatoes should be stored at higher temperatures, around 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Fruits

    • Store organic peaches, pears, plums, nectarines, kiwis and avocados in a paper bag on the kitchen counter to maintain a temperature between 55 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Cover strawberries in plastic wrap and store them at around 34 degrees Fahrenheit; citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges and lemons should be stored at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Store melons like cantaloupe and watermelon at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Grapes, apples and blueberries should be stored at 32 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Storage Methods

    • In addition to storing organic fruits and vegetables at the optimal temperature, it is also important to consider how your produce is stored. Store organic produce in well-ventilated areas. Store cold produce in the refrigerator crisper; place countertop produce in breathable paper bags; and reserve a dark, dry area for starchy tubers such as potatoes and yams. Separate produce so the flavors don't transfer, and don't wash the produce until you are ready to use it.
