Proper Tree Care in Zone 7
As spring approaches in USDA zone 7, it is an appropriate time to correct damage done to trees here by winter storms. The Forsyth County Cooperative Extension recommends removing damaged limbs and straightening leaning trees at this time. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Prune Damaged Limbs
-
Remove damaged limbs. Only emergency pruning is recommended in zone 7 before the beginning of March. Remove broken or fractured branches near the trunk or another limb. Overall pruning for shape may be included in this maintenance. Removing the lead branch of the tree may destroy the tree's shape and should not be altered unless necessary for safety.
Scaffold Branches
-
Scaffol branches provide shade. Scaffold branches provide shade and shape. If damaged or growing improperly, remove scaffold branches at the crotch. Places on trees where branches were torn off by winter weather should be smoothed and trimmed back now in zone 7.
-
Leaning Trees
-
Leaning limbs may be corrected now. Small trees in zone 7 that are damaged to the point of leaning may be straightened by attaching a nylon rope ¾ of the way up and anchoring the trees to stakes or other trees. March is the time to prune budding fruit trees and fertilize ornamental understory trees native to zone 7.
