Only emergency pruning is recommended in zone 7 before the beginning of March. Remove broken or fractured branches near the trunk or another limb. Overall pruning for shape may be included in this maintenance. Removing the lead branch of the tree may destroy the tree's shape and should not be altered unless necessary for safety.
