Weight Distribution Hitch Installation

When towing a trailer behind a vehicle, the weight of the trailer tongue generally causes the rear of the vehicle to lower and the front of the vehicle to rise. Installing a weight distribution hitch will evenly distribute the weight and remove the excess weight from the rear axle of the vehicle.

  1. Hitch

    • On level ground, line up the tow vehicle and trailer. Make sure the hitch ball's diameter matches the size of the trailer coupler. Insert the hitch bar into the hitch box, and insert a pull pin. Place the ball mount onto the hitch bar, and adjust for proper height.

    Installation

    • Connect the chains to the spring bars, lower the coupler onto the hitch ball and close the coupler latch. Position the bottom knob of the trunnion into the bottom socket of the ball mount, and slide the knob into the top opening of the ball mount. Place the snap-up brackets on the trailer, and tighten the bolt.

    Adjustments

    • Raise the trailer tongue and rear of the vehicle with a jack, lower the yoke of the snap-up bracket until it is parallel with the ground and slip the closest link over the hook. Lower the jack, and increase or decrease the number of chain links as needed. Adjust the angle or position of the ball mount if not level. The bar and chain must have ample room for movement when turning a corner.
