A subwoofer requires additional amplification, so using a power amplifier is mandatory. Whether it's external or integrated in the subwoofer directly, the power amplifier connects to your stereo's RCA pre-amplified outputs. If your factory Delco stereo has such outputs, you can connect a subwoofer to it, otherwise you'll need to buy and install an aftermarket head unit.

There's a common misconception regarding the integrated amplifier in a car's stereo system. Even though most factory and aftermarket stereo players have an internal amplifier, it is designed to power up the speaker and doesn't have the required power to handle a subwoofer.
