Open Carriers

Open carriers transport up to a dozen vehicles at a time. You may have encountered this type of trailer on the highway moving new cars from factories to dealerships. They are open to the elements, which means your vehicle will be subject to the weather along the route, as well as dirt, dust and the possibility of flying gravel or debris. Costs depend on the size and weight of the vehicle, but are always lower than closed carriers.

Closed Carriers

Closed carriers transport one or two vehicles in a trailer that is completely enclosed, so vehicles are not exposed to the elements. This method typically costs 50 to 100 percent more than open carriers.

Considerations

Substantial savings can be realized by choosing an open carrier. If you have an expensive vintage or high-end vehicle, you may prefer to forego those savings for the assurance that your vehicle will be at less risk for damage.
