The Craftsman movement began in England in the 1840s in an effort to introduce a simpler lifestyle. The movement caught on in the United States in the 1890s and was extremely popular the first 20 years of the 20th century and began regaining its popularity in the 1980s.
Famous Ties

The movement was started by architect Augustus Pugin, writer John Ruskin and artist/designer William Morris, who made the biggest impact. American architectural icon Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated craftsman principals in his designs. Gustav Stickley was an early manufacturer and published the magazine, "The Craftsman."

Craftsman light fixtures were made mainly in brass or iron with woodwork mostly in oak and glass shades. The style's austerely straight lines form basic shapes such as squares and rectangles.
