Satellites transmit and receive radio signals

The signals used to transmit Sky and all satellite TV transmissions differ from those used by terrestrial TV. The equipment needed to receive and decode the transmissions is different, as is the way that the transmission signals behave. A Sky box can only decode satellite TV data that is picked up by a dish, and not terrestrial TV transmissions.

  1. Aerials

    • Aerials pick up terrestrial TV transmissions, and while highly sensitive indoor aerials are in production, they are not capable of receiving satellite TV signals. No aerial, indoor or outdoor, could be used to receive Sky or other satellite TV shows.

    Satellite Dishes

    • Satellite dishes are the only means of receiving Sky or other satellite TV signals. They rely on having a clear line of sight between the dish and the satellite, or satellites, out in space to work.

    Satellite Dishes Indoors

    • While it is recommended to have a dish mounted outside, this is not always possible. Buildings with heritage protection are sometimes not allowed to have dishes mounted visibly. If camouflaging the dish is not an option, then dishes can be mounted in loft spaces with velux windows positioned to allow a line of sight to the space satellite transmitting the signals.
