Misconceptions
-
One common misconception is that bodyguards only protect clients from physical attacks and must be masters of combat. In reality, bodyguards provide a variety of services. In addition to providing physical protection if necessary, bodyguards also help clients deal with blackmail, embarrassment, health problems and loss of assets.
Considerations
-
Since bodyguards confront a variety of life situations, they benefit from having unique personal characteristics in addition to physical fitness and security experience. Some traits recommended by the PA Task Force include a sense of flexibility, humor, self-discipline, practicality and the ability to communicate with virtually everyone. Bodyguards should also possess the ability to identify and avoid potentially dangerous or embarrassing situations before they arise.

Future
-
Students shouldn't assume that learning ends when a training program concludes. Courses in various styles of combat and personal development will be available throughout the duration of a bodyguard's career. For example, former bodyguard and reputed consultant Harlan Austin recommends that bodyguards become certified as paramedics and learn additional languages. Payment varies per client and increases with both the bodyguard's experience and range of expertise.
