Why Doesn't ActiveX Work?

ActiveX is a software framework that uses simple programs, called controls or add-ons, to display Internet Web pages and features. If ActiveX is not working on your computer, you may have to reinstall certain ActiveX controls, computer programs or change your Internet security settings.

  1. Considerations

    • Certain websites require you to install ActiveX controls so you can properly view the site. Occasionally, these controls are not properly installed due to your computer's security settings and firewall protection. Another possibility is your computer has an outdated Web browser.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Click on Tools and Internet Options to manage your ActiveX controls and change your security settings. Click on Manage Add-ons and set all ActiveX options to Enable" If this doesn't fix the problem, click on Internet Options and change your security settings to Default to ensure they do not interfere with ActiveX control installation. If all else fails, reinstall or update your Web browser to the latest edition.

    Significance

    • Many websites use ActiveX to display certain animations and Web pages on their websites. If your ActiveX add-ons aren't functioning, this can significantly hinder your Web browsing experience. You can still use the Internet and its basic functions, but certain information, presentations and Web pages will be unavailable to you.
