Chief Petty Officers are selected from the ranks of those Naval sailors who hold the rank, or as it is called in the Navy, rate, of Petty Officer First Class. The CPO selection boards promote sailors from all of the Navy's different specialty areas, or ratings.
Selection Boards
-
Selection Boards are the name for the groups that decide who in the Navy will receive promotions. Each time they meet, the board makes its selection based on the criteria listed on a document called the precept. The precept spells out the current needs of the Navy, and what qualifications the board should look for in those they will promote.
