Kawasaki began manufacturing the Ninja 250R sport motorcycle in 1986. Despite slight differences between each year's model, troubleshooting tips remain consistent for all Ninja 250Rs.

  1. Fuel

    • Inadequate fuel levels can cause starting problems. Check the Ninja 250R's gas gauge and refuel with fresh, unleaded gasoline if the tank is empty. Kawasaki recommends gas with an antiknock index rating of 87 or higher.

    Fuse

    • A blown fuse could also cause starting problems with the Ninja 250R. Inspect the main fuse, located in the fuse box underneath the rider's seat. If the connection at the center has broken, replace it with a fuse of the same amperage.

    Battery

    • A discharged battery is another potential reason for Ninja 250R starting problems. Remove, clean and charge the battery if this is the case. Use a solution of one tbsp. of baking soda mixed with one cup of water to clean debris from the battery terminals and a separately powered device to charge the battery. If the battery is damaged, replace it with another 12-volt, 8-ampere-hour battery.

    Spark Plugs

    • Troubleshoot the spark plugs for Ninja 250R starting problems. Remove the two plugs, located in each of the engine's cylinders, and replace either one if the insulator tip is burned. The Ninja 250R takes NGK CR8E or ND U24ESR-N spark plugs with a gap set between 0.028 inches and 0.032 inches.
