How Is a Muffler Made?

A muffler is a large box located on the end of an exhaust pipe. A muffler's job is to reduce the amount of noise the engine's exhaust produces. Mufflers are designed to perform this task while enabling exhaust gases to exit.

Chambers

The first thing created when making a muffler is the outside shell and chambers. Depending on the muffler type, the chambers consist of two or three parts. The role of the chambers is to produce a certain frequency---when air passes through them---that will cancel out sound.

Perforated Tubes

Exhaust gases travel through tubes with perforations inserted into the chambers. The perforations allow only a certain volume of air to escape through them. The amount of air let out through the perforations depends on the sound the engine produces.

Sound Insulation

Sound insulation is installed on the inside walls of mufflers to further reduce sounds.
