How Is a Muffler Made?

A muffler is a large box located on the end of an exhaust pipe. A muffler's job is to reduce the amount of noise the engine's exhaust produces. Mufflers are designed to perform this task while enabling exhaust gases to exit.

  1. Chambers

    • The first thing created when making a muffler is the outside shell and chambers. Depending on the muffler type, the chambers consist of two or three parts. The role of the chambers is to produce a certain frequency---when air passes through them---that will cancel out sound.

    Perforated Tubes

    • Exhaust gases travel through tubes with perforations inserted into the chambers. The perforations allow only a certain volume of air to escape through them. The amount of air let out through the perforations depends on the sound the engine produces.

    Sound Insulation

    • Sound insulation is installed on the inside walls of mufflers to further reduce sounds.
