Performance Audit Procedures for Opacity Monitors
Opacity monitors are devices that detect variations in light transmittance from particles passing through the atmosphere. Performance audits are conducted with opacity monitors to detect emissions entering the atmosphere.
-
Purpose
-
Companies that produce toxic emissions through production typically have a continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS). This system monitors the levels of toxins and gases caused by production facilities. To monitor these emissions, opacity monitors are used. These monitors are audited to ensure they have accurate readings and that companies are following federal and state regulations regarding toxin levels.
Timing
-
Production facilities that previously were shut down and are returning to operations are required to complete a performance audit in most states. Typically, the company must conduct this after the facility is in operations for 168 operating hours. After this initial performance audit, quarterly audits are required.

Performance audits use opacity monitors to detect the amount of gas passing through an exhaust, duct, flue or stack. The opacity monitor is connected to a computer for readings and findings.
