Does Java Fern Grow Well in Clay Pots?

Adding java ferns to an aquarium setting provides more plant life for the fish to use as a habitat. Ensuring that the java fern is firmly rooted in the aquarium keeps it growing healthily.

Rooting the java fern in a clay pot can create a successful growing environment for the fern. Using fishing line to secure the fern to the pot helps hold it in place and prevent the fern from floating to the surface before it is rooted.

Placement

Place the clay pot where it is unlikely to be knocked over by fish or other aquarium creatures. Fill the interior of the pot with aquarium substrate to allow the java fern to root firmly in the pot and continue growing.

Considerations

Clay pots will develop a covering of algae over time as they remain in the aquarium. Some types of algae can prove problematic for fish and aquatic plants. Occasional cleaning of the pots helps maintain the health and cleanliness of the aquarium.
