Baluster Marking Guide

Balusters are the closely spaced supports that, together with a handrail, make up a balustrade or banister on a staircase. They are important aesthetically, but also perform an important safety function. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Balustrade Centerline

    • The first step in marking baluster positions is to establish the line along which they will be located, otherwise known as the balustrade centerline. The balustrade center line is typically half the width of the baluster away from the stringer -- the long, horizontal timber connecting the balusters -- or skirting board. Mark the centerline on the each tread (the horizontal surface of each step) in the staircase.

    Number of Balusters

    • Measure the vertical distance between newel posts with a tape measure. Add the width of one baluster to your desired spacing between balusters. Divide the first figure by the second to give the number of balusters you need.

    Baluster Spacing

    • Multiply the number of balusters by the width of each one and subtract this figure from the vertical spacing between newel posts. Divide the result by the number of balusters plus one (to account for the extra space in a balustrade) to give the spacing between balusters.
