Full-Spectrum IR Conversion

A full-spectrum IR conversion is the process of converting a digital camera so it can take photos across the spectrum of possible light sources, including infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV) and visible lights.

  1. Mechanics

    • Digital cameras typically are sold with a filter attached that blocks the reception of infrared light. A full-spectrum conversion removes the filter but allows for the re-attachment of the filter, as well as other filters. The filters are changed in front of the camera lens.

    Uses

    • The conversion to a full-spectrum IR-capable camera typically is used for specialty photography. Possible applications include forensics, astronomy and medical photography.

    Function

    • A full-spectrum conversion means a photographer can use a filter to block a particular wavelength of light or can not use a filter at all and allow all possible wavelengths of light to light the shot. This provides the photographer with additional flexibility in photography styles. It does mean additional work and care with handling the filters.
