The Difference in Honda 185 & 185S

by Sarah McLeod

During the early 1980s, Honda introduced body style changes to its three-wheeled ATC185 motorcycles that gave the vehicles a slimmer appearance. Engine and transmission parts were left unaltered for component interchangeability. The newer model, called the ATC185S, was very similar in appearance to its predecessor.

Model Years

Built in 1980, Honda's ATC 185 is the predecessor to the ATC 185S, which was produced from 1981 to 1983.

Dimensions

While the length and width of the vehicles remained the same, Honda's ATC 185S had smaller wheels than the 185. The wheelbase decreased from 45.7 inches on the 185 to 44.1 inches on the 185S. In addition, the ground clearance was lowered from 4.9 inches to 4.7 inches. The 185 weighs 302 pounds, while the 185S weighed 270.1 pounds.

Tire Size

As a consequence of a smaller wheelbase, the 185S was made to fit smaller tires as well. The 185 tires are sized at 25 x 12 x 9 (in inches), while the 185S tires measure 22 x 11 x 8.

Seat Height

Contributing to the new streamlined look, the 185S's seat height was raised to 26.2 inches from 25.6 inches for its predecessor.

Retail Price

The Honda 185 was priced at $1,248.00. Its successor cost $1,148.00.
