Solar panels are one of the most common forms of alternative energy production available. It is important that they are stored and transported in the appropriate conditions to minimize damage. Any damage to a solar panel will reduce its efficiency. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Operation

    • Solar cells operate by converting sunlight into electrical energy. Electricity flows out of the cell and is either used immediately or stored in batteries.

    Materials

    • Most solar cells used today are photovoltaic cells. At the outermost layers of these cells are the electrical contacts and an antireflective coating. This coating is there to prevent as much sunlight from being reflected as possible.

    Damage Effects

    • In field trials, the degradation of the surface layer, or module package, was shown to be responsible for a reduction in the efficiency of the panel. When storing solar panels, it is important to prevent damage to the outer layer.

    Storage

    • Use adequate padding to prevent scratches on the surface layers. This will also help prevent breakage. Solar panels are exposed to rainwater in their use so waterproof packaging is not necessary, but, as with all electrical appliances, it is important to keep all leads and connections dry.
