Chevy Malibu Shifter Problems

A bad shift solenoid can cause Chevy Malibu shifter problems.

Introduced in 1964, and named after the city of Malibu, California, the Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size automobile manufactured by General Motors. The Chevy Malibu can develop shifter problems that impair its operation.

Shift Solenoid

The shift solenoids in the Chevy Malibu block or enable pressure to flow through the hydraulic lines to the gears. A defective shift solenoid may prevent the clutch from activating. Inspect the Malibu shift solenoids for signs of wear or damage caused by excessive current, as well as the connections for wear or corrosion, and replace them as necessary.

Gear Shift Sensor

The Chevy Malibu contains a gear shift sensor beneath the brake pedal that may stick, preventing the shifter from activating. Spray lubricant on the sensor button to enable it to engage properly.

Leaky Fluid Lines

Transmission lines in the lower pan of the Chevy Malibu can leak at the metal joints, resulting in a drop in hydraulic pressure, causing difficulty shifting to higher gears. Examine the joint seals for leaks and repair the lines as needed to restore proper shifter function.
