An email processing service processes electronic mail messages that a company's owner or employees would normally receive. Such a service can prove useful for small businesses and business owners who don't have the time or staff to handle a large volume of email.

According to Re: Messaging Solutions, an email processing service can respond to email as the client directs, delete advertisements and forward messages when appropriate. Thus the business owner or staff only receives messages that require their response.

Perhaps an electronics store decides to use an email processing service. The first day, the service receives five "spam" ads, a virus, a question on store hours, and an inquiry on how to set up a stereo. The service would delete or respond to each message except the stereo question, which it would forward to the store manager.

Email processing services also have some disadvantages. Allowing someone else to read a company's email reduces privacy for both the customer and the business owner. Some email processing services are automated, but this means it will take time for the program to learn exactly how to sort and identify spam and other junk mail. Also, important messages will not arrive until the service has processed and forwarded them.
