Design Guide for LED Street Lights

Light-emitting diode (LED) lights have a number of properties that make them conducive to lighting outdoor spaces, such as streets.

  1. LEDs

    • LEDs operating by using small chips or diodes within a very small bulb. This chip is held in place by a small cup that sends the light in one direction. This makes LEDs conducive to situations where a spotlight is needed. As this is often required for traffic signals and other street lights, LEDs are an excellent type of light for use outside.

    Distribution

    • Some LEDs come with a diffusion lens that spread the light out in many directions. This is useful for cases where a more uniform distribution of light is required over an outdoor space.

    Tone

    • LEDs produce a 'cool' kind of light often described as "white light." This light is most appropriate for outdoor lighting scenarios, as they more closely mimic daylight.
