Homemade Four-Way Speakers

Homemade Four-Way Speakers thumbnail
A four-way speaker can have more than four drivers.

A pair of speakers doesn't need to be expensive to sound good. It doesn't matter if the speakers were bought at a store or homemade, if they follow some basic construction principles the sound will be decent.

  1. Misconceptions

    • The name of four-way speakers is misleading because it leads the consumer to believe that the speaker has four drivers. The fact is that the name derives from the four frequency ranges the speaker can cover. Even though most four-way speakers usually consist of four driver units, this is not a general rule and the number of drivers may vary.

    Features

    • A four-way speaker consists of a bass driver, a mid-range driver, a tweeter driver --- which is common components in three-way speakers --- and an added super-tweeter. The role of the super-tweeter is to enlarge the field of high frequencies that the speaker can cover.

    Considerations

    • Before building a four-way speaker system, you should take into consideration the fact that the fourth component --- the super-tweeter --- is used to produce sounds between 22 and 25 kilohertz, frequencies which most people cannot normally hear.
