Video Controller Hardware Installation Problems

A video controller, also known as a video card, is installed to the motherboard on the inside of a computer. There can be a few problems that occur when installing a new video card.

  1. Loose Card

    • The most common problem when there is a video card hardware error is that the card is not inserted all the way into the motherboard. When this occurs, the computer will let out one long beep followed by two short beeps when it is powered on.

    Expansion Slot

    • Video cards are designed for either an AGP slot or a PCI-Express slot, and the card will not work when inserted into the wrong slot. The documentation that comes with video card will tell you which type of expansion slot the card needs. In addition, the different slots will be labeled on your motherboard.

    Monitor Connections

    • A loose monitor connection is likely the culprit when the computer turns on with no error beeps but no picture is displayed on the monitor. This is usually the result of the DVI cable between the card and monitor not being plugged in fully, or a damaged cable.
