Solid Axle Vs. Independent Suspension Weight Difference

Trucks are the only vehicles on which you will find a solid axle.

There are two different types of car axle suspension: solid axle and the newer independent suspension axle. Every car manufactured today has the independent suspension, but you can still find solid axles on trucks for a number of reasons.

Weight

Solid axles weigh more than independent suspension axles. The weight difference is because solid axles require heavier leaf springs and suspension linkages to balance the increased vibration the rest of the car will receive.

Comfort

Independent suspension axles are designed to give a much smoother ride than solid axles. The smooth ride is a result of the shock dampening systems that the independent suspension axles provide.

Strength

Solid axles are stronger than independent suspension axles because there are fewer parts that can break. Solid axles are commonly used for off-roading in very rocky areas where the suspension of your vehicle will be under heavy stress.
