Weaver and Picatinny refer to different ways of mounting accessories and optics on a firearm, and while both are based on the same concept, each has separate specifications, which may prevent cross-compatibility.

  1. Identification

    • Scope mounted to a Weaver rail

Picatinny rails were designed for use by the military, and only if they fit military specifications can they be called Picatinny; Weaver rails are not restricted by the precise specifications the military requires. Some Weaver rails lack any grooves whatsoever or consistent spacing between sets of grooves.

    Terms

    • A "rail mount" colloquially refers to the accessory to be mounted; a "rail," "base" or "rail mounting system" refers to the furniture of the weapon itself on which the "rail mount" is placed.

    Compatibility

    • Picatinny mounts that grab the side of the rail but do not rely on the .206-inch-wide Picatinny grooves can fit on most Weaver rails. Weaver rails are typically spaced .180 inches apart, and so Weaver mounts should fit on any Picatinny rail. However, compatibility between Picatinny rail mounts and Weaver rails, because of the Weaver's lack of standard spacing between grooves, can be problematic. The best guide is the manufacturer, and remember, buyer beware.
