Electrical switchgears are the heart of an industrial electrical system.

Switchgear testing is primarily the concern of facility managers of industrial plants and factories because a switchgear malfunction can shut down a plant. The testing is applied to either troubleshoot a known problem or as preventive maintenance.

  1. Identification

    • Electrical switchgears include electrical equipment, such as power and distribution transformers, circuit breakers, interrupter circuits, generator switchgears, motor controllers, bus ducts and protective relay panels. The testing is specifically tailored to test the unique features of each type of equipment under test.

    Testing

    • Specific testing includes high potential testing on cables, relay testing calibration, insulation power factor testing, control wire function checkout, transformer saturation and polarity testing. In addition, the cabling connecting the switchgear to other electrical circuits are also tested.

    Significance

    • Transformers and switchgears are the heart of any industrial facility's electrical system. The switchgear serves as the intermediary between the incoming electricity from utility companies and all other electrical circuits within a facility.
