Design Guide for Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes are large cranes used to hoist materials from the ground or lower surfaces. They are commonly used in large construction projects. They consist of a number of parts and different configurations, and must adhere to industry standards.

  1. Components

    • Overhead cranes consist of a variety of parts that may be assembled and disassembled when desired. These include the bridge, the end trucks, the trolley hoist, the bridge girders, the trolley and the hoist.

    Configurations

    • Overhead cranes come in one of four main configurations: top running, under running, single girder and double girder. Depending on your purpose for using an overhead crane, one of these configurations will be used.

    Standards

    • All overhead cranes must adhere to set of standards produced by the Cumulative Environmental Management Association(CEMA) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). These are CEMA/NEMA 1, CEMA/NEMA 12 and CEMA/NEMA 4. These provide standards for various health and safety considerations including falls and electric shocks.
