Safety of GFC Kilns

Safety of GFC Kilns thumbnail
Mass-produced pottery is an example of ceramics that are fired in GFC kilns.

GFC kilns are used industrially worldwide in ceramic firing and wood treating ceramic. These kilns utilize a pulse firing system to maintain temperature accuracy in the kiln. Because of the heat and emissions from the kilns, safety precautions are still required to operate them.

  1. Use in Well-Ventilated Areas

    • GFC kilns are designed to lower the NOx emissions from the kiln, but enough remain to make it hazardous for workers without proper ventilation. Make sure that there are plenty of outlets to fresh air surrounding the kiln and fans to circulate air through the area.

    Personal Protective Equipment

    • Though worker areas are designed to be safe, it is still recommended and in accordance with worker safety laws that personal protective equipment be used when you are operating the kiln. This includes fire- and heat-resistant gloves, protective goggles and, in some cases, flame-retardant aprons or chaps to cover clothing.

    Moving Parts

    • GFC kilns operate on an automated or a manual setting to allow for the best firing settings for different products. Before touching or completing repairs on heated, moving parts, you should shut down the kiln, close it off from its power source and allow it to cool completely.
