Not all antennas have the same range.

Outdoor antennas vary a great deal in range. The Consumer Electronics Association created a color-coded scheme to help consumers pick out an antenna that best fits their needs.

  1. VU-190XR Specifications

    • The Radio Shack VU-190XR outdoor HDTV antenna has a range of 100 miles on UHF and 190 miles VHF. It is considered a medium-long to long-range outdoor HDTV antenna. It has a 160-inch length and 95-inch width and a 38-inch height and is generally used in green CEA zones.

    CEA Code

    • To determine if the antenna will work, simply enter your address and home layout in the form on the Antenna Web website (see References). The site provides a map to your home to verify exactly where you are and a list of color codes necessary for specific network stations. If you are in a green zone or better, it fits your zone.

    Other Considerations

    • There is no way to offer a foolproof mechanism for recommending an outdoor antenna. Such factors as trees, hills, proximity to interfering areas and other factors can effect an individual house's antenna needs. In general, pick out as large an antenna as fits your budget and installation capacity. Use an amplifier and an antenna rotator to fine tune the signal and always maintain your cabling.
