Electric or natural gas stoves are not a homeowner's only stove choice.

Heating bills from electricity or natural gas can be expensive. However, if you have a supply of wood and a desire to undertake a project, you could try making your own wood stove from an old water heater.

  1. Reasons

    • Your reasons for wanting to make a wooden stove can vary. Maybe you like the taste of food cooked over a wood-fed flame. You could also be interested in an alternative method of heating your home.

    Tanks

    • Old water heating tanks make an ideal body for a homemade wood stove. They have simple shapes, are made of sturdy metal, are large enough to hold a a sufficient quantity of wood and can often be found discarded in junkyards.

    Conversion

    • The major items you need to add to the water heater to turn it into a wood stove is a chute for the stove's smoke, and a hinged lid to open up the container to add and light wood. These steps are best done by someone who knows how to weld. If you don't, find a shop that will make the conversions for a reasonable price.
