What Paperwork Is Needed When Disbursing Dividends?

A company's shareholders are the owners of the company. A company has to maintain some paperwork relating to its shareholders. Some of this paperwork relates to the dividends the company pays its shareholders.

  1. Dividends

    • Dividends are part of a shareholder's returns for investing in a company. If a company makes profits, it may pay out some of it to shareholders in the form of dividends.

    Paperwork Requirements

    • Companies have to report the dividend payments they make to their shareholders. For this purpose, they have to file a 1099 form with the Internal Revenue Service. A company has to file a separate 1099 form for each shareholder it pays dividends to.

    Tax Payments

    • Shareholders also receive a copy of the 1099 form for their records. They should use this to make tax payments on the dividends they receive from a corporation.
