Sweep the floors first, removing any dried debris from the floors and then vacuum using a vacuum without a beater bar. Mop the floors with a professional wood floor cleaning product from the manufacturer or retailer of your oak floors. The World Floor Covering Association recommends a terrycloth mop, which has a softer surface than a traditional mop head.

Do not use any type of cleaner that contains ammonia or any form of diluted ammonia on the oak floors. The ammonia causes the finish to look dull or brittle and may make it difficult to restore the floors later.
