Bathtub Caulking Problems

Caulking prevents water damage in the bathroom.

Bathtub caulking is wedged in the joint between the bathtub and surrounding walls. It prevents water from entering and damaging building materials behind it. When problems arise with the bathtub caulking, remove the old caulking and replace it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cracks

    • Building materials expand and contract naturally with age and environmental changes. Although caulking is flexible, it may develop cracks over time, breaking the seal that prevents water from getting into the joint.

    Mildew

    • If water gets into the caulking joint, that moisture may lead to black mildew growth. Showers and baths provide mildew with a moist environment, while body oils, soap films and hair care products contain ingredients that mildew can feed on.

    Grout

    • Tile installers sometimes make the mistake of applying grout before applying caulk. While grout works well to prevent water from seeping through the gaps between tiles, it cracks when applied in the caulk joint because it doesn't flex when the walls or the bathtub expands and contracts.
