Benefit of Pretensioner Seat Belts

Pretensioner seat belts tighen upon impact during an auto accident.

Pretensioner seat belts contain a mechanism that makes the belt tighten into place in the event of a crash. The pretensioner works in tandem with the belt's anchoring system.

  1. Reduced Slack

    • One of the basic purposes of a pretensioner seat belt is to reduce slack in the belt. These belts stay firmly wrapped around you, unlike manual seat belts which can loosen after you've buckled them.

    "Traveling" Prevention

    • When a seat belt is buckled around a passenger, it can still "travel," or move around within the belt. This means that a passenger can be in motion during impact instead of braced to the seat. Pretensioner seat belts reduce travel, which decreases the chance of severe injury.

    Airbag Efficiency

    • These seat belts improve airbag efficiency by holding you in place so the airbag hits you directly, which cuts down the risk of injury when the bag inflates. Some belts are also designed to tighten when the airbag is deployed.
