Are Evergreen Trees Effective in Reducing Traffic Noise?

Evergreen trees are by far the best choice for reducing traffic noise. They grow taller and thicker during the warm months and stay green during the cooler months to provide protection during all seasons.

Evergreen Trees

If you're going to plant trees, consider fast growing trees to provide the most protection in a short amount of time. Some of the fastest growing evergreen trees are Leyland Cypress, White Pine and Green Giant Thuja.

Evergreen Shrubs

Shrubs, while much shorter, work well if planted below larger deciduous trees. Shrubs like Holly, Dwarf Burford or Nellie R. Stevens can provide a different texture than trees do. Holly also grows red berries that provide food for birds.

Other Benefits

Evergreens, both trees and shrubs, provide protection from wind, salt, sun and snow. If you have neighbors you no longer want to look at, the evergreens provide a privacy screen. The two most important benefits are defining your landscape and adding beauty to your property.
