Design of a Performance Turbo Muffler

The muffler on a vehicle's exhaust is located near the exit of the exhaust. The primary purpose of the exhaust is to quiet and muffle the sound of the exhaust note. A turbo muffler is a performance muffler that can increase an engine's power and deepen the sound.

Larger Tubing

The exhaust tubing on the inside of a turbo muffler is a larger diameter than a stock muffler. Though originally designed for turbocharged engines, turbo mufflers have come to mean a muffler that has larger internal tubing and less baffles than a stock exhaust. This allows the exhaust gases from the engine to be evacuated more efficiently, allowing the engine to create more power since it is running more efficiently.

Fiberglass Matting

Most turbo mufflers use fiberglass matting in the walls of the muffler. The construction of the muffler is designed to reduce the high frequencies while emphasizing the lower frequencies for a deeper, more-tuned sound from the exhaust system.

Considerations

A turbo muffler may yield a horsepower increase, particularly when combined with a larger exhaust system. But it may also make the engine exhaust note louder than the owner prefers.
