Design of a Performance Turbo Muffler

The muffler on a vehicle's exhaust is located near the exit of the exhaust. The primary purpose of the exhaust is to quiet and muffle the sound of the exhaust note. A turbo muffler is a performance muffler that can increase an engine's power and deepen the sound.

  1. Larger Tubing

    • The exhaust tubing on the inside of a turbo muffler is a larger diameter than a stock muffler. Though originally designed for turbocharged engines, turbo mufflers have come to mean a muffler that has larger internal tubing and less baffles than a stock exhaust. This allows the exhaust gases from the engine to be evacuated more efficiently, allowing the engine to create more power since it is running more efficiently.

    Fiberglass Matting

    • Most turbo mufflers use fiberglass matting in the walls of the muffler. The construction of the muffler is designed to reduce the high frequencies while emphasizing the lower frequencies for a deeper, more-tuned sound from the exhaust system.

    Considerations

    • A turbo muffler may yield a horsepower increase, particularly when combined with a larger exhaust system. But it may also make the engine exhaust note louder than the owner prefers.
