Widened axles give greater balance.

The term "full width axle" is often used by off-road vehicle aficionados. It describes wider replacement axles for narrow-bodied, off-road vehicles. "Full width" refers to the width of axles of on-road, full-sized cars.

  1. Standard Widths

    • The standard, full-width axle ranges from 65 inches to 69 inches, "wms to wms." The letters "wms" are shorthand for "wheel-mounting surface." The axle is measured from one wheel-mounting surface to the other.

    Manufactured for SAS

    • Some standard axle swaps -- or SAS's as they are called in the trade -- do not involve full-sized car axles. The swaps often consist of prefabricated axles that are the width of car axles. Available widths vary within the standard range. Other features of these specialty axles vary dramatically, and are designed for specific makes and models of four-wheel drive vehicles.

    Junkyard Dogs

    • A do-it-yourselfers sometimes hunts junkyards for full-width axles. The DIY hunter does not look for axles of a specific width, as the width is common. He seeks axles with a housing and differential that match the drive train of his vehicle.
