Considerations
-
Of course, the average bamboo plant growing in a pot will not grow 47 inches in a day, whether kept indoors or outdoors. The record-breaking bamboo was likely grown in optimal conditions outdoors with excellent sun, water and soil conditions. A bamboo grown in a pot can still grow quickly, but the size of the pot restricts the plant's growth; container-grown bamboo ceases growth at about 15 feet tall.
Identification
-
To identify an exact strain of bamboo, contact a bamboo specialist. There are estimated to be around 2,000 varieties recorded so far. It is beneficial to get a specialist's opinion because different varieties grow at different rates.

Misconceptions
-
The plant marketed as Lucky Bamboo, which is often planted in a pot or vase with water and decorative stones, is unrelated to true bamboo. This plant is a houseplant in the Dracaena family. It requires different care and will not grow nearly as quickly as bamboo will.
