Construction Information on Slab Bolsters

There are numerous sizes and shapes of supports (slab bolsters) to hold reinforcing material in place. These supports are necessary so the reinforcing is not displaced when concrete is placed over them.

Function

Variations of slab bolsters support lower slab steel from slab form; lower slab steel on fill; upper slab steel from slab form; one layer of steel above another; heavy bottom steel on soft material; layers of steel --- one above the other; lower beam steel from slab form; wide spaced light steel in slab/deck construction; or two bottom bars in the ribs of joist type slabs. They are also designed to fit metal decks.

Types

Slab bolsters are typically small-diameter steel rods or steel wires of different gauges. Many are molded out of plastic in various shapes. Slab and beam bolsters come with or without plates. Continuous, individual, and special high chair supports are used for different applications. Slab bolster legs can be capped for supporting lower beam steel from slab forms and for other applications.

Features

Some slab bolsters are designed to eliminate separation or buckling. Others can be stacked to achieve a specific height requirement. Plastic slab bolsters do not rust, absorb water or deteriorate when exposed to salt water. Other supports available include safety caps, spacers and mesh chairs.
