Coils are used in everyday technology to make electromagnets, heaters and inductors. The winding of a coil can take a long time to do manually. Coil winding machines automate this process creating hundreds of turns per minute.

Manual Coil Winding Machine

Manual coil winding machines can be made relatively easily with a few simple items. Coiling wire normally comes on a spindle. Mount the spindle on a laboratory stand, so it rotates freely. Wrap the first bit of wire around the material. Creating the coil this way will be much faster since the spindle automatically turns freeing both hands to create the coil.

Automatic Coil Winding Machines

With a little bit of ingenuity, an automatic coil winding machine can be created at home. Create the setup describe above for a manual coil winding machine. Drill a small hole in the material you are coiling. Next find a drill piece slightly larger than the hole created and gently force it into the hole. Now when the drill is powered, the material should turn, pulling wire off the spindle and winding the coil. This method may not be suitable for coiling electromagnets, since drilling a hole into a magnetic material may change its properties.

Advanced Home Coil Machine

Using a direct current (DC) electrical motor and simple power supply, you can create a more-advanced home coiling machine. Ensure the motor has a high enough torque for such an application.
