How Long Does it Take a Pothos Plant to Grow?

The humble golden pothos is popular for more than its ability to live indoors in low light and waxy, variegated leaves. It is not only attractive but fights pollution. Its growth rate depends on environmental factors. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Starting

    • Pothos, or Epipremnum aureum, only grows from 18 inches to 2 feet long as a houseplant and up to 10 feet in the wild. Along its length, aerial roots occasionally grow from nodes that reach into mosses or growing posts. Cuttings of the vine start easily in water or soil.

    Growth

    • Rooting pothos may take three to four weeks. With bright light, sufficient nutrients and warm temperatures, however, experimenters at the Mid-Florida Research and Education Center grew vines up to a foot in length during a period from December to May. Pothos grows best at 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and when given 3000 to 5500 foot candles of light.

    Considerations

    • House interiors are not controlled greenhouse environments, but pothos that are positioned in bright light near a window will grow faster than one put in an interior room that must rely on artificial light. Plants should be kept away from drafts and grow best if fertilized every 90 days.
