How Long to Water Your Lawn
-
Be sure to water your lawn the proper length of time. The length of time a lawn should be watered depends on the root system of the grass. Bluegrass, for instance, has shallow roots and requires a shorter watering period than grasses with longer roots.
How Often to Water Your Lawn
-
Don't overwater your lawn. Over-watering encourages your grass roots to remain too shallow. They must grow to their potential for your lawn to be healthy. Give them an opportunity to get thirsty enough to reach deeper into the soil in search of water. University of Illinois Extension suggests 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water each week.

Dethatching
-
A lawn matted with thatch prevents water and fertilizers from reaching down to the grass roots. This condition is caused by overwatering. Thatch must be broken up so the right amounts of water and fertilizers can penetrate the soil.
