Aluminum Welding & Bending Information

The thickness of aluminum should be determined before bending.

Aluminum welding procedures can differ depending on the type of aluminum alloy being welded. Also, because of its composition, aluminum doesn't ordinarily bend.

  1. Welding

    • An important part of welding aluminum is material identification which allows you to know its weldability. Another thing to note is that, simply being exposed to air causes aluminum to create a protective layer of aluminum oxide. This protects the aluminum but may need to be removed before the aluminum can be properly welded.

    Bending

    • Determine the thickness of the aluminum as thicker aluminum requires the help of mechanical benders. The bending itself should be done in one slow, consistent motion. This prevents crimping in the aluminum that can occur from bending too fast.

    Tips

    • An aluminum bend's integrity can be preserved during the bending process in several ways. One is by putting tapering and sand inside one end of the aluminum tube before bending. Another way is to put a spring inside the tube prior to bending it.
