Read the descriptions for plants that work well in containers or varieties that are dwarf, low-growing or compact. Look at several catalogs, as special dwarf varieties may be available from only one company.

Garden centers, nurseries, retail home centers and supermarkets sell vegetable seeds, particularly in the spring. Read the seed packets for the best varieties for indoor growing. Although these outlets offer convenient shopping, the widest selections typically are found in seed catalogs.

Consult your local cooperative extension office before buying seed. It can give you a list of recommended varieties for your area, along with the best places to buy them. Not every variety is adapted for growing where you live.
