Invisible fencing is designed to keep dogs and cats contained.

Invisible fencing is an electronic barrier designed to keep a dog or cat from leaving the defined space. The pet wears a receiver collar that emits a sound followed by a mild electric shock if the animal gets too close to the barrier. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Receivers on the collar intercept electronic signals emitted by the "fence" system. As the pet approaches the electronic barrier, the collar emits an audible signal such as a beep. If the cat or dog continues to approach, the collar sends a mild shock similar to a static electricity jolt to the pet's neck. With training, the animal learns to stop or turn away before the shock. Both wireless and underground hard-wired systems are available.

    Cost

    • The price of the system can vary from several hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the manufacturer, the size of the area you want to fence, and whether you do the work yourself or have it done. Most systems include at least one collar. If you have additional pets or if your collar needs replacing, you can buy extra collars. Although the cost varies by manufacturer, as of February 2011, replacement receiver collars range from $50 to $60 for some models of Innotek and PetSafe collars to $100 for some SportDog models and about $150 for Invisible Fence brand collars. Microlite brand ultra-light receiver collars manufactured by the Invisible Fence company cost $350 as of February 2011.

    Considerations

    • Not all municipalities recognize invisible fencing as proper pet containment and could seize your pet under its "dog at large" ordinance. Invisible fencing does not keep other animals or people from entering your yard. A pet panicked by fireworks or other events or one that is over-excited by the sight of something on the other side of the barrier might keep running despite the corrective shocks and escape. You should monitor battery strength to make sure the collar is working properly.
